Coronavirus vaccine coverage now at 80 percent – vaccine still worth taking

Publication date 10 Nov 2021

Finland has now achieved 80 percent coverage among those 12 years and over for two doses of the coronavirus vaccine. All in all, more than 8 million coronavirus doses have been administered in Finland. More than 85 percent of those 12 and over have received the first dose.

“The expected 80 percent milestone has now been reached also for the second vaccine dose, which is the result of our common efforts. People have been eagerly getting vaccinated, and most of those susceptible to a severe disease are now well protected, which is a wonderful thing”, says Mia Kontio, Chief Specialist at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).

“This marker is a good place for moving forward, and it remains very important for each person to get their own vaccines if they have not yet done so. A vaccination offers very good protection against severe coronavirus disease, and it also helps protect those who are near you. There are still many unvaccinated persons in the population who are at risk of getting severe coronavirus disease.”

Vaccination coverage among the young has risen magnificently

Vaccination coverage varies by age group. The elderly are the group with the highest coronavirus vaccination rate. All age groups among those over 45 years of age have vaccination coverage of more than 80 percent for the second dose.

“However, in recent times it has been apparent that vaccination coverage among the young has risen wonderfully. Those aged 16 to 24 have gone over 80 percent in vaccination coverage for the first dose. Young people should continue to actively get their own coronavirus vaccinations”, Kontio says.

For certain population groups a third coronavirus vaccination is now also being offered.
