Harmonising statistics methods – THL will start reporting coronavirus death data only from the National Infectious Diseases Register
The statistics method for the coronavirus deaths reported on THL’s Situation update on coronavirus webpage will be harmonised. The change will be implemented on June 28th.
Death statistics will be switched from numbers reported by hospital districts to only include coronavirus-related deaths in the Finnish National Infectious Diseases Register. The plan is to entirely abandon the separate collection of data from hospital districts in connection with coronavirus death statistics.
“Switching to a single statistics method will make the up-to-date statistics of coronavirus-related deaths clearer and more harmonised and improve the quality of data”, explains THL Statistical Researcher Oskari Luomala.
This change will not affect the information presented in open data and on the coronavirus map as they are already sourced from the Infectious Diseases Register.

Information in the National Infectious Diseases Register is updated with a few days' delay
The data on coronavirus infections and deaths in the National Register of Infectious Diseases maintained by THL is based on information obtained directly from laboratories and physicians. The data in the Infectious Diseases Register is updated automatically with the Population Information System.
The data obtained through the Infectious Diseases Register also provides information on the deceased: their median age, gender distribution and percentage known to have chronic illnesses. The above information will be published on the Situation update on coronavirus webpage.
The Situation update on coronavirus webpage is updated once a week on Wednesdays. The information published on THL’s coronavirus map is updated daily at 12 noon.
