THL Biobank is excited to announce that imputed genome-wide SNP data is now available for biobank research for 3730 individuals belonging to the Finnish THL Psychiatric family collection.

This collection includes families ascertained for schizophrenia (SZ), schizoaffective disorder and bipolar spectrum disorder (BPD). This large study was initiated in the 1990s with the aim of studying the genetic risk factors for serious psychiatric disorders.

Families were recruited country-wide, and the diagnosis of each patient was reliably validated based on DSM-IV criteria. The 180 BPD families include individuals born between 1940 and 1969 and hospitalized with a diagnosis of BPD and their family members (N=678). For schizophrenia, in 1994–2008, the study consisted of 3405 individuals from 734 families where a member of the family has schizophrenia.

Genotyped SNP data for THL Psychiatric Family Collection has now been imputed as a part of the FinnGen research project at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) against the population-specific SISu v3 reference panel.

Another recently collected research cohort of Finnish patients diagnosed with psychotic illnesses, the SUPER Study, contains imputed genome wide SNP data for 8860 individuals. This data is also available through THL Biobank.
