Koronavilkku app key codes to remain valid for 12 hours - In the future, the code will be provided automatically in some parts of Finland

Publication date 11 May 2021

The period of validity of the Koronavilkku key code will be extended from four hours to 12 hours. The period of validity of the key code is to be extended at the request of health care professionals to allow the infected person sufficient time to use the code. The extension of the validity period is also a prerequisite for the automatic generation and sending of the key code 24 hours a day.

The automatic sending of a key code will speed up the delivery of the key code to the Koronavilkku user, thus informing other application users about possible exposure more quickly.

Health care professionals in Helsinki and in the area using the HAAVI system will be the first to introduce the automatic sending of key codes gradually starting in May. The system is used in the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa, the South Karelia social and health care district, the Kymenlaakso joint municipal authority for social and health services Kymsote and the Hospital District of North Ostrobothnia.

When a Koronavilkku user is diagnosed with the coronavirus, a health care professional will send a single-use key code to the user by text message. When a code is entered into an application, those application users who have encountered the infected individual prior to this will receive a notification of possible exposure. To date, more than 22,700 key codes have been issued.
