Last week the number of people living in Finland who have had their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine rose to three million

Publication date 22 Jun 2021

The number of people in Finland who have received their first doses of a COVID-19 vaccine was reading three million last week. This means that about 54 percent of the entire population have been vaccinated at least once.

“Three million recipients of the first injection is an excellent number. People have been actively taking their vaccines when it is their turn, which is an important step toward a more normal life”, says THL Chief Specialist Mia Kontio.

At present, the largest numbers of first doses are being given to those aged 30 to 50, but those in the 50-69 age group are still being vaccinated in many areas.

“Vaccine coverage for the first dose among those over 60 is approaching 90 percent and vaccine coverage for those aged 50-59 is already exceeding 80 percent. Good figures can also be seen in other age groups: for example, coverage for the 40-49 age group is about 70 percent, and for those aged 30-39, it is already over 40 percent”, Kontio says.

About 803,000 people, or 14 percent of the entire population, have received their second doses of the vaccines – the full series.

Getting a second dose has moved ahead quickly in the older age groups. For example, about 59 percent of those aged 75-79 have had a second dose, up from just 36 percent last week.

Large consignments of vaccines arriving in Finland in June accelerate vaccination rate

Very many vaccines are arriving in Finland in June. In week 25 an estimated 401,000 doses will arrive in Finland and in week 26, 402,000 doses will come. However, in July, the numbers are expected to fall, for example, in week 27 about 240,000 doses are arriving in Finland.

“The large numbers of vaccines coming by the end of June mean that 80 percent of those aged 16 and over will have received their first doses. In practice, some will not get their vaccinations until July. However, if as many as 90 percent of those over the age of 16 were to get vaccinated, some from the younger age groups will get their first dose during August”, Kontio says.

“In addition, the large amounts of vaccine in June will make it possible to administer significant numbers of second doses, and the number of recipients of second doses will reach a million in early July."

More than four million doses have come to Finland during the COVID-19 vaccination effort.
