THL updated its mask recommendation – mask use still recommended in crowded public indoor spaces especially to unvaccinated people

Publication date 1 Oct 2021

THL has updated its recommendation on the use of masks for citizens. The recommendation is no longer based on the different phases of the coronavirus epidemic, but mainly on people's own case-by-case discretion.

It is still recommended to use a mask particularly in crowded public indoor spaces, and especially if you have not been vaccinated.

In September, the Government outlined in its update to the hybrid strategy that regional epidemic phases and the related recommendations will be abandoned.

‘Our updated mask recommendation is based on the current situation of the coronavirus epidemic. Vaccination coverage is getting higher all the time, and people are now trusted to use their own discretion to determine the situations where the use of a mask is still warranted,’ says Otto Helve, Chief Physician of THL.

THL's updated mask recommendation in brief:

  • Use a mask at your own discretion. Consider using a mask especially if you have not received full series of coronavirus vaccinations.
  • We recommend using a mask especially in public indoor spaces where there are many people in close proximity to each other.
  • We also recommend using a mask in public transport. When the national recommendation for remote work ends on 15 October, the number of passengers in public transport may increase rapidly and the means of transport may become crowded.
  • The mask recommendation applies to those aged 12 or over.
  • Organisers of different events can give their own mask recommendations regarding their own facilities.
  • Regional authorities may give mask recommendations for their region based on the regional epidemic situation.
  • The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health is responsible for the mask recommendations for workplaces.

THL has previously prepared a table for assessing the risk of coronavirus infection at different events. The table for assessing the potential risk was originally created to support the decisions of regional authorities, but it can be utilised by anyone.
