Two thirds of people aged 12 or over have received a second coronavirus vaccine dose in Finland

Publication date 23 Sep 2021

The coverage of the first dose of coronavirus vaccines in people aged 12 or over is now 83 per cent in Finland. A total of 4.09 million first vaccine doses have been administered. For the second dose, the coverage is about 66% for people aged 12 or over with 3.2 million doses administered.

In the 55 to 59 age group, 80% vaccination coverage has now been achieved for two coronavirus vaccines. Nearly 90% of this age group has received the first dose.

“People under 40 should be active in getting their first dose since our coverage is still under 80 per cent for that age group”, explains Anniina Virkku, Medical Specialist at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).

All coronavirus vaccines used in Finland provide good protection against coronavirus infection and excellent protection against severe disease that requires hospitalisation.

“The majority of people currently hospitalised because of coronavirus are unvaccinated. The number of hospitalised vaccinated people is very small, which strongly indicates that the vaccines are effective against severe disease”, Virkku says.

Many municipalities are offering vaccinations to non-residents

“At the moment, many municipalities are offering vaccinations to the residents of other municipalities as long as they have enough vaccines available. This makes it even easier to get vaccinated”, says Virkku.

It is estimated that 127,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine will arrive in Finland next week. The number of vaccines in the last week of September will likely be significantly higher, with an estimated 315,000 vaccines arriving in Finland.
