Unvaccinated face significantly greater risk of hospitalisation than those vaccinated

The unvaccinated face a significantly greater risk of hospitalisation than those  vaccinated. In August-October the unvaccinated were 19 times more likely than others to end up in specialised health care and 33 times more likely to end up in intensive care.

For example, when vaccination coverage is 80 percent, the vaccinated outnumber the unvaccinated among those aged 12 and above.

“The number of unvaccinated ending up in hospital should be seen in proportion with the number of unvaccinated according to age group. Consequently, we cannot draw any conclusions about the effectiveness of a vaccine based exclusively on the number of unvaccinated and vaccinated being treated in a particular hospital at the same time”, says THL Head Physician Otto Helve.

Research has shown that the protective effect of two doses of vaccine against severe coronavirus disease remains very good among most of the population for at least six months.

“The protection given by a vaccine is weaker with medical at-risk groups and the elderly, and a third dose is recommended for them. Of the patients now hospitalised who have been vaccinated twice, most belong to one of the medical risk groups for coronavirus disease, or they are elderly”, says Helve.

Three reasons to take a coronavirus vaccine:

  1. The vaccine protects you against the serious form of coronavirus disease.
  2. The vaccine that you take protects those close to you and those belonging to medical risk groups.
  3. By being vaccinated you help ensure that those with serious illnesses other than coronavirus disease can get the care that they need.
