What is monkeypox? – See THL's website for an overview of the disease

Publication date 30 May 2022

Map of the world.

THL has published an information package on monkeypox on its website. The website has basic information on the disease and its transmission, its symptoms and treatment and how to protect yourself from the disease and prevent it.

Monkeypox is not easily transmitted from person to person, as it often requires very close contact. Monkeypox is typically associated with a bumpy or blistering rash for which there is no other explanation. The rash may be preceded by other common symptoms of infection, such as fever or headache.

Developing a severe form of the disease is possible for those whose immune system has been weakened by other illnesses or medical treatment.

If you suspect that you have been infected with monkeypox, it is important that you contact health care services by phone before seeking treatment.

So far, no cases of monkeypox have been diagnosed in Finland. THL monitors the situation both in Finland and internationally.
