Reliable information on infectious diseases
THL’s Infectious Diseases pages provide up-to-date and reliable information on the prevalence of various communicable diseases. The pages present the current epidemiological situation of the most important infectious diseases.
The pages offer links to registers maintained by THL as well as to information from WHO, ECDC and other international organisations.
THL maintains the national Infectious Diseases Register based on the Communicable Diseases Act and Decree. Approximately 100,000 communicable disease cases are reported to the register annually. Data has been collected since 1995.
Register data is used for the prevention, control and research of infectious diseases. Physicians and laboratories can submit notifications to the Infectious Diseases Register.
Data is collected from several registers
Through the online service of the Infectious Diseases Register, you can access detailed statistics on the number and incidence of infectious diseases.
Monitoring antimicrobial resistance measures the effectiveness of control measures and detects new threats. In Finland, antimicrobial resistance is monitored using several systems (FINRES).
Healthcare-associated infections are monitored nationwide in Finland in THL’s Healthcare-Associated Infections Register.
Food- and waterborne outbreaks are monitored using a joint reporting system of the Finnish Food Authority and THL (RYMY).
Reporting services
Monthly-level statistical data includes information on all diseases that must be reported to the Infectious Diseases Register. The data can be viewed by age group, sex, time and region.

Weekly-level statistical data includes information on diseases with seasonal variation as well as diseases with sufficiently high weekly case numbers. Data can be viewed by time and region starting from the beginning of 2018.
