Who are the questionnaires intended for?
The background information and discussion of questionnaires are intended for professionals working in maternity and child health clinic services. The questionnaires support consistent practices and procedures in clinic work. The use of the questionnaires is based on THL`s recommendations. Some questionnaires are produced by THL and others by external organizations, but THL is responsible for their translations.
The contents, recommendations, and guidelines of health check‑ups in child health clinics are described in THL’s NEUKO database.

Background information questionnaire for maternity clinics
You can use the background information questionnaire during the first maternity clinic visit. The questionnaire serves as a tool for initiating discussion and helps identify the family’s various needs. It enables you to tailor the content of the check-up individually, focusing on strengths, concerns, and support needs highlighted in the questionnaire. Completing the questionnaire also prompts the client to reflect on their own and their family’s situation, which may lead to positive changes in health habits even before the health examination.

Alcohol and substance use questionnaire
The Alcohol and substance use questionnaire developed for maternity and child health clinics is a comprehensive substance use questionnaire, including the AUDIT questionnaire (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, developed by WHO). You can use the questionnaire to assess substance use among expecting parents and parents of young children, as well as to screen for excessive alcohol consumption during health examinations where the AUDIT questionnaire has previously been used. If necessary, use the questionnaire during other visits as well. It is important to discuss alcohol and other substance use with parents in the clinic, particularly from the perspective of family and child wellbeing.

EPDS questionnaire
You can use the EPDS questionnaire (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) in maternity and child health clinics during pregnancy and after childbirth to identify symptoms of depression and anxiety. The questionnaire supports early discussion and helps assess the need for support. Use the questionnaire in late pregnancy (weeks 30–32) and during the postnatal health examination (around 6–8 weeks). If necessary, use the questionnaire during other visits as well.

Questionnaires on family resources
You can use the Everyday resources for families expecting their first child questionnaire during maternity clinic visits and the Everyday resources for families with a newborn baby questionnaire during child health clinic visits in the child’s first year. The questionnaires support discussion about the family’s everyday resources and help identify strengths and support needs. They are particularly suitable for comprehensive health examinations when assessing the wellbeing of the whole family. You can give the questionnaire to parents to complete at home and discuss it during the visit, or the short version can be completed during the appointment.

Vavu questionnaires
You can use the Vavu questionnaires to support interaction between expecting parents and their baby, as well as between parents and their child. It supports finding solutions, recognizing family resources, and highlighting support needs.

THL´s role
THL conducts research, monitors and develops practices in maternity and child health clinic services and supports the implementation of national guidelines and legislation. THL issues recommendations on the use of questionnaires, but decisions on whether their use is mandatory are made by the wellbeing services counties.
The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health (STM) is responsible for guiding and steering the development of maternity and child health clinic services.
