National survey on health, well-being and service use among foreign-born population (MoniSuomi)

In the MoniSuomi survey, data is collected on the health, well-being and social and health service experiences of the foreign-born adult population living in Finland. The information obtained from the survey helps to assess how people living in Finland are doing. In addition, the results of the study help to develop services that support the health and well-being of the population in the changing world situation. The information obtained from the MoniSuomi survey can be used to promote the equality of the foreign population in Finland.

The survey is part of the Healthy Finland population survey family of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). The next MoniSuomi survey will be carried out in 2028 as part of the Healthy Finland survey.

Goals

With the survey, data is collected about the health, well-being and social and health service experiences of the foreign-born adult population living in Finland. The results are comparable with the Healthy Finland survey of the entire population, and changes can also be monitored over time.

The results can be examined by background country group, gender, age group, wellbeing services county, education and reason for migration. The municipalities that funded the study will also be able to examine the results at the municipal level.

Implementation

The 2022 study sample consisted of 18,600 individuals selected using stratified random sampling (23 strata) from mainland Finland. The target population comprised foreign-born adults aged 20–74 with a foreign background who had been permanently resident in Finland for at least one year at the time of sampling.

The data collection begun in September 2022 and ended in March 2023. The data were mainly collected through an online questionnaire. In addition, the data collection was supplemented with paper questionnaires and phone interviews as well as register data. 44% of the sample participated in the study (n=7838). The basic results of the study were published between June 2023 and March 2024.
