Second probable case of monkeypox in HUS area

Publication date 3 Jun 2022

Globe and stethoscope.

The Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS) has confirmed a second infection caused by an Orthopoxvirus. The monkeypox virus is part of the Orthopoxvirus genus. Final confirmation on whether a monkeypox infection is involved will come when the sequencing of the sample is completed in the coming days.

The case involves an adult male who was infected while on a trip to another European country.

Monkeypox is not easily transmitted among humans, and the infection usually goes away by itself. If you suspect that you may have been infected by monkeypox, contact health care services by telephone before seeking treatment.

About 500 cases of monkeypox have been diagnosed outside of Africa during the current epidemic so far.
