THL Biobank as a promoter of research for 10 years already!
Finland's first biobanks, THL Biobank and Auria biobank in Turku, started their operations ten years ago in March 2014.
Today, there are already 11 biobanks operating in Finland, as well as the Finnish Biobank Cooperative (FINBB), founded in 2017, which brings the sample and data resources of its member biobanks and their background organisations centrally available to researchers.

THL Biobank operates as an important part of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare. THL Biobank aims to collect and store nationally significant research collections, so that they can be used for research in future research projects as well. The most significant research collections in THL Biobank are the extensive research cohorts for population health monitoring regularly collected by THL and its predecessor institutes. Currently, THL Biobank already manages 30 different research collections consisting of samples and data from approximately 240,000 sample donors.
THL Biobank supports research aiming to promoting the health of the population, identifying the causes of common diseases in Finland, developing more personalised health care and finding solutions for disease prevention.

THL Biobank exists thanks to the positive attitude of the sample donors towards research. The protection of the personal information of the sample donors is essential for the entire biobanking activity, and therefore data protection is strictly enforced. By participating in biobanking, one can promote medical research, knowing that their samples and data are used safely and with high quality.
We thank all our sample donors for participating in research and promoting biobanking!
