What are cookies and what information do they collect?

A cookie is a text file that is stored on your browser when you use a website. A cookie collects information about your visit to the site.

Some cookies are necessary, and the thl.fi website needs them to function as intended. There are also cookies that collect information that the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) uses to analyse the use of the thl.fi website, collect statistics and develop the pages and their content.

This information include the network request made by the user, date and time of the request, the IP address of the user’s terminal device and the type and language of the browser.

Cookies may also be placed on your browser by third parties whose content is embedded in our site (e.g. YouTube videos on our website).

Statistical cookies used to collect user and analytical information

These cookies collect information about the use of our website to help us to gain better understanding. We improve the site based on this information.

We request your consent for the use of statistical cookies when you arrive on the thl.fi site. You agree upon these cookies by selecting “I accept all cookies”. You can adjust these settings later on the "Cookie settings” above.

Statistical cookies collect for example the following information:

  • number of visitors on the site and on a certain page
  • the terminal device used to access the site
  • the user’s IP address, anonymised
  • the source from where users accessed the site (a search engine, a direct link, etc.)
  • how long does the visit to the website last
  • did the user find the information they were looking for

Askem (former React and Share)

THL uses the Askem services to collect feedback from the users of the thl.fi website. If you consent to the use of statistical cookies, you can see reaction buttons and a feedback field on the Finnish thl.fi site. You can use them to provide feedback on the content of a page and to share the page on social media.

The Askem cookies store a randomly generated string on the visitor’s browser. This string is used to identify events from the same browser. Users cannot be identified from these cookies. It is recommended not to provide any personal data in the free-text feedback field. We not reply to feedback.

THL uses the received feedback to develop the site.

Askem does not disclose information, and third parties cannot use the cookies or information that can be linked to them.

Askem cookies are stored on your browser for up to 30 days.

Siteimprove

The Siteimprove service provides information about possible problems related to the thl.fi website, such as problems with availability, function of the links and the visibility of the website in search engines. THL uses this information to develop and improve the site.

IP addresses are automatically anonymised, and it is not possible to link the collected information to any natural person.

Siteimprove does not disclose information, and third parties cannot use the cookies or information that can be linked to them.

Siteimprove cookies are stored on your browser for up to 1,000 days.

Snoobi Analytics

THL uses the Snoobi Analytics program to collect general statistical data on visits and visitors to the website for the development and quality control of the website.

Instead of using cookies, the data is collected with Snoobi’s cookie-free monitoring. The visitor’s entire IP address is not saved, and it is only used to determine geographical location. The location data is indicative: accuracy is good at the country level and moderate at the regional and city level.

Snoobi does not collect data on users’ choices in the health and wellbeing-related calculators on the thl.fi website.
Blood Alcohol Concentration Calculator

The data in Snoobi is collected regardless of users’ cookie settings.

Third-party applications

Some pages of the thl.fi website use third-party applications to display content. These include, for example, embedded SoundCloud podcasts, YouTube videos, and maps provided by Google Maps. In connection with a page download, these applications can place cookies on the user's browser that share information with third parties.

The terms and conditions of use of the third party are applied to third-party applications. The function of these cookies cannot be adjusted with the cookie settings of the thl.fi website.

With regard to YouTube videos, the thl.fi website uses a no-cookie solution to prevent third-party cookies when the user accesses a page on the thl.fi website where a video is embedded. Regardless, user information is transferred to the YouTube service if the user reacts to the embedded video by clicking it, for example.

More information about the cookie practices and data protection can be found on the website of a particular service:
