Statistical report 54/2024, 17.11.2024
Official Statistics of Finland, Joint replacement surgeries. THL.

Description of the statistics

The statistics on joint replacement surgeries contain data on joint replacement surgeries based on Implant Register data.

The Implant Register is provided with data on the surgery itself, reasons for the surgery, and the artificial joints that are put in place (including used components, the fixation method of the joint prosthesis, information on methods of attachment, and the products used). The register also contains data on complications and, in cases of revision surgeries, on removed joint prostheses and the reasons for the new surgery.

Data on orthopaedic joint prostheses implanted since 1980 have been collected in the national Implant Register. Data are collected from all units performing joint replacement surgeries in Finland. The statistics are based on annual Implant Register notifications collected from health care units based on personal identity codes. A separate notification is filed on each joint prosthesis implanted, even if they were implanted on the same patient.

Until 1989, the provision of data was based on voluntary notification by the operating surgeon. Since 1989, the provision of data has been statutory.

An annual statistical report is compiled on the Implant Register statistics. The report presents data on all public hospitals as well as the notifications received from the largest private hospitals.

Update schedule

The statistics on joint replacement surgeries are published annually in the autumn, when the previous year's data are published.
