Service description
The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) vaccine immunology laboratory determines antibody concentrations from serum samples as a paid service. Five different tests are available for measuring the concentration of antibodies for pneumococcal polysaccharide, pneumococcal conjugate, tetanus, diphtheria and Hib vaccines.
Measuring the vaccine response to a diphtheria, tetanus, and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine is used in immunodeficiency diagnostics. To examine vaccine responses, IgG class antibody concentrations are determined from a serum sample before and after vaccination.
Antibody testing is performed using fluorescent multiplexed bead-based immunoassay (FMIA). A single sample can be used to simultaneously measure the concentration of antibodies for several different antigens.

- The test assays for antibodies to Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 1, 4, 5, 7F, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F and 23F
- The analysed serotypes are included in both conjugate vaccines (Prevenar, Synflorix) and polysaccharide vaccines (Pneumovax)
- Suitable for measuring the response of a polysaccharide vaccine (Pneumovax) when the research subject has received a polysaccharide vaccine (Pneumovax) but not a conjugate vaccine (Prevenar, Synflorix)
- Also suitable for measuring conjugate vaccine response

6296 S-SpnAbNV test
- The test assays for antibodies to Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 2, 8, 10A, 11A, 12F, 15B, 17F, 20 and 33F
- The analysed serotypes are only included in the polysaccharide vaccine (Pneumovax).
- Suitable for measuring the response of a polysaccharide vaccine (Pneumovax) when the research subject has previously received a conjugate vaccine (Prevenar, Synflorix)

3585 S-HibAb test
- The test assays for antibodies to polysaccharide of Haemophilus influenzae type b.
- Suitable for measuring response when the test subject has received a Hib or 5-in-1 (DTAP-IPV-Hib) vaccine.

1253 S-CodiAb test
- The test assays for antibodies to diphtheria toxoid from Corynebacterium diphtheriae.
- Suitable for measuring response when the test subject has received a DT, dtap, DTaP-IPV or DTaP-IPV-Hib vaccine.

- The test assays for antibodies to tetanus toxoid from Clostridium tetani.

How to use the service and contact us
Shipping samples
In connection with vaccine response tests, please note that the first sample should be taken before the vaccination and the second sample at the earliest 4 weeks after the vaccination. It is recommended that the second sample be taken no later than 2 months after vaccination.
The test result will be available to you at the latest one month after the sample arrives. We send the results in writing by post.

Instructions on sending samples
- Serum samples (around 0.5 ml) can be stored in a refrigerator if sent on the same or the following day (longer term storage at -20 ° C). You can also send a frozen sample at room temperature.
- The name of the research subject, his/her date of birth and the date of sampling must be written on the sample tube. Remember to attach a carefully completed referral note with the sample.
- The serum tubes, together with an absorbent (pulp or sponge cloth), are sealed in a plastic bag, packed in a padded black and yellow striped cardboard carrying case or plastic cover, with the referral on top.
