Source‑tracking analysis of water contamination

Service description

Laboratory of water microbiology offers a selection of analytical methods that can be used to trace the origin of fecal microbes. These methods can be applied, for example, in:

  • in connection with a suspected waterborne outbreak
  • to investigate a water-related problem
  • identify microbiological threats
  • ensure the quality of water

The client takes and delivers the water samples to laboratory of water microbiology in Kuopio.

Sampling and Shipping

Microbial Source Tracking (MST)

The available method selection enables the detection of fecal contamination in a water sample and determination of whether it originates from humans, ruminants, poultry, pigs, gulls, or other animals (e.g., horses, sheep, dogs, birds).

The analysis is based on nucleic acid (DNA, RNA) extraction and Real Time RT-qPCR methods, which are used to detect and quantify target genes. Metabolically active bacteria contain more copies of ribosomal RNA than corresponding DNA gene copies.

The method panel includes markers for

  • General fecal contamination: GenBac3
  • Human: HF183
  • Ruminants: Rum-2-Bac
  • Poultry: CL
  • Pig: Pig-2-Bac
  • Birds: GFD
  • Gulls: Gull4
  • Horse: HorsemtDNA
  • Sheep: SheepmtDNA
  • Dog: DogmtDNA

The method is not accredited. Sample volume and target are selected according to the customer’s request.
