Course description 

These online courses, developed by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), are designed to strengthen your competence in mental health promotion, reduce stigma through increased awareness, and support effective suicide prevention. The courses offer evidence‑based knowledge, practical tools, and real‑world examples to help you promote mental well‑being in your community or professional setting.

  • Online course on mental health promotion explores how mental health promotion can be effectively integrated into various roles within municipalities and wellbeing services counties, providing practical approaches and tools for professionals working in different sectors. The course content covers a range of themes relevant to professionals in client‑facing roles, including mental health skills, supportive interaction, and meaningful encounters. For organisations and project planners, the course provides information on key legislation and practical approaches to monitoring and evaluating activities. Students and other interested learners will gain accessible explanations of the central concepts and themes in mental health promotion. We particularly recommend this course for professionals working in wellbeing and health promotion. The course is offered as self‑study material in THL’s Moodle learning environment.
  • Online course on stigma and increasing stigma awareness explores stigma and discrimination as societal and interpersonal phenomena, along with approaches to their prevention. It also addresses ethical stress and employee wellbeing. Learners receive practical tools to support respectful interaction, recognise and value diversity, understand clients’ and patients’ rights, and develop more equitable services within their organisations. The material can be studied independently or together with a colleague or fellow student. It is also well suited for group learning within a workplace community, for example as part of a training session or development day. The course is available as self‑study material in THL’s Moodle learning environment.
  • Online course on suicide prevention introduce, among other topics, the protective and risk factors associated with suicide, as well as effective practices for engaging with individuals at risk and supporting their loved ones. Testimonies from experts by experience deepen the course content. The purpose of the course is to strengthen competence in meeting individuals at risk of suicide, recognising suicide risk, and initiating conversations about it. The course also offers specialised modules for healthcare professionals, such as care planning for patients at risk of suicide.
