This EU Twinning project aims to strengthen sustainable and adequate capacities of the health care system in Serbia to diagnose, monitor, alert and respond to communicable diseases, in order to make the health sector more aligned with those of the EU Member States as well as to effectively participate in the EU communicable diseases surveillance networks, including those under coordination by ECDC.

Objectives

Overall objective:

  1. strengthening of the Republic of Serbia’s institutional capacities and legislative framework for fulfilling the requirements of the EU membership in the area of public health,
  2. effective participation of the Republic of Serbia in the EU communicable disease surveillance networks, and
  3. reduction of the risks of serious cross-border health threats.

Specific objectives:

  1. Improving the system of communicable disease surveillance and outbreak investigation across the country.
  2. Strengthening and harmonizing the laboratory capacities of the Republic of Serbia’s network of institutes of public health (IPH) and national reference laboratories (NRL).

Implementation

Twinning project brings together public sector expertise from EU Member State Finland and Partner Country Serbia to provide support for the transposition, implementation and enforcement of the EU legislation.

The methods are peer-to-peer activities by sharing own experience and lessons, by demonstrating good practices, by providing advice and second opinion.
