The objective of the assignment was to assist the ECDC in supporting the Greek authorities in their response to the HIV outbreak among people who inject drugs in Athens. The assignment assessed and evaluated the provision of current needle and syringe programme (NSP) services in Athens and provided key recommendations for strengthening these services. In addition, a prioritisation of measures and a timetable of implementation of the recommended services as well as achievement indicators were developed. To perform these tasks, THL expert team conducted a mission to Athens, together with ECDC staff. Finally, a short training for Greek stakeholders was organized in Athens. THL provided three experts and project management services for this assignment, which was funded by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
