Elimination of hepatitis C virus in Finland 2025–2027

The project entity supports Finland's goal of eliminating the hepatitis C virus by 2027 as part of the WHO global elimination strategy.

The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) coordinates state-funded projects that advance the accessibility of prevention, testing and treatment, particularly among people who inject drugs.

Within the project, two prevalence studies will be conducted to assess the prevalence of hepatitis C, the need for treatment, and the effectiveness of the project.

Goals

  • Eliminate hepatitis C as a public health problem in Finland by 2027.
  • Prevent new infections and reduce health harms related to the disease.
  • Improve access to prevention, testing and treatment among people who inject drugs.
  • Support WHO’s goal of eliminating hepatitis C by 2030.

Implementation

THL coordinates national elimination activities, supports the strengthening of testing, diagnostics and treatment pathways, and conducts baseline and endline prevalence assessments of the hepatitis C virus. Regional actors develop and implement measures that enhance prevention, testing and treatment, and report their activities to THL.
