European web survey on drugs (EWSD)

The European Web Survey on Drugs is a European project led by the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA) and implemented in EU Member States and neighbouring countries. The aim of the project is to collect data and increase understanding of patterns of drug use and drug markets in Europe. To obtain as comprehensive a picture as possible, information is needed directly from people who use drugs. The project uses an online survey to collect data in order to reach a sufficient number of people who use drugs.

A key advantage of web-based surveys is that they allow direct access to people who use drugs. Such surveys are quick and relatively cost-effective, generate new data rapidly, and can help identify emerging trends. When the same questions are used and the translation process is carried out rigorously, the surveys also enable cross-national comparisons.

The project tests different recruitment materials and channels in order to reach diverse groups of people who use drugs.

Goals

  • New and up-to-date information is collected on how, where and why drugs are used in Europe, particularly directly from people who use drugs.
  • Evidence is provided to support drug policy and interventions to better inform decision-making and to develop interventions and services.
  • Understanding of trends is increased by rapidly identifying emerging or changing patterns related to drug use through the web-based survey.

Implementation

First online survey was conducted in 2015. Finland participated in the second and third rounds in 2018 and 2021. Planning for the fifth round will begin in 2026, and it will be implemented in 2027.
