Joint action on respiratory diseases (JARED)

The JARED project, supported by the European Commission, aims to reduce the burden caused by chronic respiratory diseases (CRD) and their risk factors in Europe.

The main focus of the project is on public health–relevant diseases such as asthma, COPD, interstitial lung diseases (ILD), and occupational lung diseases. Certain infection related lung diseases are also taken into account.

A total of 35 universities, research institutes, and healthcare organizations from 14 European countries are involved in the project.

Goals

The objective of the JARED project is to strengthen the prevention and treatment of chronic respiratory diseases, improve patients’ quality of life, and integrate research results into health policy.

Implementation

Key components of the project include:

  • reducing smoking
  • improving indoor air quality
  • preventing occupational respiratory diseases
  • early detection of respiratory diseases
  • developing multidisciplinary patient care
  • promoting pulmonary rehabilitation and self management solutions.

The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) participates in several thematic areas at the project level.
