Prevention of Health ThreatsOn other websites
Project page (SHIELD)SHIELD is a European joint project that aims to reduce premature morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases. A particular focus is on the prevention of cancers caused by infections and cancers that can be prevented by vaccines.
SHIELD is developing a comprehensive prevention programme for the whole of Europe by combining different prevention methods and actors. The project works closely with civil society, health authorities, and scientific experts.
Goals
The SHIELD project aims to reduce premature morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases in Europe by preventing infectious and vaccine-preventable cancers by developing an effective, evidence-based and environment-appropriate set of prevention strategies.
The project identifies and works to overcome structural and individual barriers, addresses stigma and discrimination, particularly in relation to HIV and other infections, and supports the scaling up of effective prevention interventions across European countries.
Through modelling, SHIELD identifies the most effective combination of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies to reduce infection-related cancers.
Implementation
The project is large and divided into eight different work packages. Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare's (THL) CUBE Centre leads work package no. 8, which develops effective ways to reach and help particularly vulnerable groups such as migrants, mobile populations, prisoners and people who use drugs.
Funding
Co-funded by the European Union under the EU4Health Programme.
EU Commission (80%), national funding (20%).
Partners
The SHIELD consortium includes 68 organisations from 25 European countries. The 21 EU Member States as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova, Norway and Ukraine are involved.
