Unit at THL
Promotional and Preventive WorkThe project examines the possibilities of utilising data accumulated outside the service system in health and wellbeing promotion management.
Goals
- Examine the possibilities of utilising new data sources from the perspective of health and wellbeing promotion.
- Obtain up-to-date local information on the wellbeing and health challenges of the population by utilising data accumulated in people's daily lives.
- Supplement the knowledge base accumulated from the service system, surveys and research.
- Develop and produce a model for wellbeing and health promotion planning and resource allocation for planners and decision-makers in municipalities and wellbeing services counties, which enables rapid response to emerging challenges.
Implementation
The starting point of the project is to compile data other than that produced by the service system. In the project, data obtained from different data sources is compiled into a single data reserve. Forecasts, situational overviews and indicators needed for health and wellbeing promotion management are produced from the data using data mining and statistical learning.
Data collection and reporting were tested in a year-long pilot project in the City of Tampere. In the pilot phase, the number of datasets and indicators was limited. In the first phase, the objective was to utilise sales data from grocery stores, participation in sports and activites och social media discussions.
Based on the positive experiences of Pirkanmaa, South Savo and South Karelia wellbeing services counties and the cities of Espoo, Tampere, Helsinki, Turku and Vantaa during 2021–2025, it was decided to continue the project for a follow-up period of 2026–2028. After the pilot phase, the following themes were selected:
- Youth marginalisation
- Regional unequities in health and wellbeing
- Healthy diet
- Sports and acitivites
- Alchohol, tobacco and addictions
