Monitoring of persistent organic pollutants in the environment 2024 (POP environmental monitoring)

The study monitors the chemical status of the Baltic Sea and Finland's inland waters by measuring concentrations of harmful substances in biomarker species (fish). The study is carried out in collaboration with the Finnish Environment Institute.

Goals

The aim is to assess the status of the Baltic Sea and inland waters in accordance with water and marine management regulations. The study measures concentrations of persistent harmful substances in different fish species that are significant for human exposure and monitors trends affecting human exposure.

Implementation

The Finnish Environment Institute conducts the collection of samples (fish), and THL analyses persistent environmental contaminants in the samples. The Finnish Environment Institute uploads the results to the open-access KERTY database. The results are also published in joint (including scientific) publications.
