Population policy programme – VPO Maternity and child health clinic project

Finland’s birth rate has declined rapidly to a record low level. The project’s initiatives strengthen child- and family friendliness in society and contribute positively to the birth rate. The project initiatives form part of the Finnish Government’s Population Policy Programme. During the current government term, a decision was made to launch four funded development initiatives, three of which are included in this project.

The project is linked to the strategic objective Equal services of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), as its objectives promote cooperation with wellbeing services counties. The aim of the project is to develop a national model for family and childbirth education, to create a national care pathway model for support and assistance for people who have experienced miscarriage or termination of pregnancy, and to develop a national model for strengthening support for people with fear of childbirth, as well as for monitoring childbirth experiences.

The project produces nationally equitable and multidisciplinary service models that support expectant families, people who have experienced miscarriage or termination of pregnancy, and those suffering from fear of childbirth during an important and sensitive phase of life. Through the national service models, services are delivered in an equitable and multidisciplinary manner regardless of the service provider. They ensure that families receive comprehensive services and information in a timely manner and in line with their needs. The project will be implemented in 2026–2027.

Implementation

The project will be implemented in broad-based cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, wellbeing services counties, non-governmental organisations, education providers and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare during 2026–2027.

Funding

The project is implemented with funding from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

Partners

Universities of applied sciences, wellbeing services counties, the third sector, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, and universities.
