Safe water for all (WaterFall)

Climate change, demographic shifts, geopolitics, ageing infrastructure and the changing security situation pose challenges to Finland’s ability to provide safe drinking water.

The Safe water for all (WaterFall) project focuses on improving water security and the operational reliability of water services from raw water sources to end users.

The project is part of the Strategic Research Council’s programme Water as an Element of Well-being, Security and Peace (WAWE), which aims to produce sustainable, equitable and science-based solutions for water and marine environment governance and for strengthening water security.

Goals

The aim of the project is to strengthen the preparedness, contingency planning, and ability of water utilities to anticipate changes and make long-term decisions to secure drinking water production in a changing operational environment.

Implementation

In this multidisciplinary project, challenges related to drinking water production are identified and assessed through risk scenarios, and preventive measures are sought to promote water supply security in accordance with the comprehensive security model.

The project combines spatial and data analyses, field studies, waterborne epidemic data, legal materials, and various qualitative research methods into a holistic multi-objective assessment.
