Service description
Laboratory of water microbiology in Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) receives microbial strains, genome samples and sequences isolated from water that cause infectious diseases, when they are related to a waterborne epidemic.
The municipal health protection authority, in cooperation with the laboratory analyzing the water samples, is responsible for sending the microbial strains, genome samples and sequences to laboratory of water microbiology in Kuopio. Instructions for sampling and shipping
Important information about the service
In accordance with the Government Decree on the Investigation of Food and Waterborne Epidemics (1365/2011, Section 3), the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare is responsible for the detailed investigation, typing and surveillance of epidemic agents isolated from humans or water.
In addition to drinking water epidemics, microbial strains, genome samples and sequences are also received from other waterborne epidemics, such as bathing water epidemics at public beaches and pool water epidemics in swimming halls and spas.
Legionella strains must always be sent whenever Legionella in any water system is suspected or known to have caused even a single case of illness.

Who we provide the service for
The reception of microbial strains, genome samples and sequences is part of the investigation of waterborne epidemics. The municipal health protection authority is responsible for sending the related strains, genome samples and sequences to laboratory of water microbiology, in cooperation with the laboratory analyzing the water samples.
What you can expect from us
The results of the detailed investigations of the microbial strains, genome samples and sequences will be reported to the municipal health protection authority as soon as they are completed.
Fees and charges
The reception of microbial strains, genome samples and sequences are free of charge when related to the investigation of a waterborne epidemic.
How to use the service and contact us
Always agree in advance on the sending of microbial strains, genome samples and sequences. The sender is responsible for both freight and delivery. Microbial strains and genome samples must be sent so that they arrive the morning after the sampling day (for example, by express parcel).
