THL Biobank exists thanks to sample donors and study participants. Using the samples and data stored in the biobank researchers aim to identify causes for common diseases, develop more individualized health care and find disease prevention measures. By donating your samples and data to biobank you are promoting high-quality medical research knowing that your samples and data are being used safely.

THL Biobank wants to thank all its sample donors for participating in biobank research!

How to participate in biobanking in Finland?

THL Biobank is part of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and collects new samples only in connection with new research projects initiated by THL or other research institutes. So THL Biobank does not currently collect samples from volunteers.

Instead, there are six hospital-based biobanks operating in Finland, which also collect samples from volunteers (Auria Biobank in Turku, Helsinki Biobank, Biobank of Eastern Finland in Kuopio, Central Finland Biobank in Jyväskylä, Northern Finland Biobank Borealis in Oulu and Tampere Biobank). In addition to these, Terveystalo Biobank Finland collects samples from volunteers and a biobank sample can be given to Blood Service Biobank at the time of blood donation.

If you would like to participate in biobanking, please contact a biobank operating in your local area and inquire it's procedures in obtaining consent and samples.
