The Healthy Finland survey continues the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare's (THL) long tradition of conducting population surveys. This page briefly describes the previous data collections of the Healthy Finland survey and the extensive population surveys concerning the adult population that preceded it and were carried out by THL. For each population survey, you will find links to the survey's privacy notice, the dataset description in the Data Catalogue, and the survey questionnaires.
Questionnaire surveys of the adult population
In 2025–2026, the Healthy Finland survey collects data for the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS). The EHIS is carried out across the European Union every six years and produces comparable information on the situation in different countries. In Finland, the EHIS has been conducted in 2014, 2019 and 2025.
The Healthy Finland survey produces up‑to‑date information on the health, wellbeing and service use of people living in Finland, as well as changes in these and future developments. The survey is also used to compile a situation overview for the wellbeing services counties. The Healthy Finland survey has been conducted in 2022 and 2024.
The FinSote survey monitored changes in the population's wellbeing and health across different population groups and regions in 2017–2020. The survey also produced monitoring and evaluation information on how well the population's service needs were met, as well as on the population's views regarding the social and health care service system and the availability, quality and use of services.
The ATH questionnaire survey monitored changes in the population's wellbeing and health across different population groups and regions in 2010–2017. The survey also produced information on the need for, use of and perceived adequacy of health services.
Health examination surveys
The Healthy Finland survey produces up‑to‑date information on the health, wellbeing and service use of people living in Finland, as well as changes in these and future developments. The study is also used to compile a situation overview for the wellbeing services counties. The survey combines the earlier FinSote questionnaire survey and the National FinHealth health examination survey.
The National FinHealth survey produces information on the health and wellbeing of adults living in Finland and the factors that influence them. The information obtained from the survey can be used to examine the prevention and treatment of diseases, to promote Finns’ functional capacity and wellbeing, and to develop health and wellbeing services in Finland. Data collections were carried out in 2017–2021. The in‑depth analysis and reporting phase is still ongoing.
The National FINRISK survey was a large population survey on risk and protective factors for chronic non‑communicable diseases in the Finnish population. Data collections were carried out every five years from 1972 to 2012. The in‑depth analysis and reporting phase is still ongoing.
In the Health 2000 and 2011 surveys, information was collected on Finns’ health, functional capacity and wellbeing; their determinants; the need for and use of services; as well as health and wellbeing differences between population groups and their causes. Data were collected from the same individuals in 2000 and 2011. The follow‑up material enables the study of factors that predict changes in health, functional capacity and wellbeing.
The Mini‑Finland Health survey, conducted in 1978–1980, aimed to examine the population’s health, need for care and functional capacity comprehensively and reliably. The Mini‑Finland Health survey was the third phase of the Finnish Mobile Clinic Health survey.
The dataset from the Finnish Mobile Clinic multiphasic screening study, conducted by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland in 1966–1972, was intended to support the early detection of diseases and research on health. In 1973–1976, the Mobile Clinic’s follow‑up phase—the so‑called repeat survey—was carried out.
