Implementing ICD-11 in Finland

The project coordinates the national implementation of the ICD-11 classification, which includes translating the classification into Finnish, integrating it into healthcare information systems, providing implementation support, and producing training materials for healthcare professionals.

Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) prepares the implementation of the classification in collaboration with healthcare professionals, organizations, information system providers, and other national and international networks.

Goals

The ICD-11 classification published by the World Health Organization (WHO) replaces the previous ICD-10 classification. As a result of the project, Finland will adopt an internationally compatible and interoperable ICD-11 classification.

With the implementation of ICD-11, the quality and accuracy of recording diagnoses will improve. The adoption of the new classification will benefit patients and healthcare professionals, social and healthcare service providers and organizers, as well as national and production of international statistics and research.

Implementation

The implementation of the ICD-11 classification requires national coordination of data production and management, as well as integration of the classification into information systems. THL is updating national data specifications, which will make use of diagnosis data in accordance with ICD-11.

The project produces training materials for social and healthcare professionals and supports social and healthcare organizations in the implementation of the classification.

THL coordinates the Finnish translation of the ICD-11 classification using a tool based on artificial intelligence technology. Medical experts participate in the review of translation. The Swedish translation of the classification is obtained through Nordic cooperation.
