Mental health as capital

Mental health is a central part of human life and affects health, well being, relationships, studying, work, and the entire course of life. Good mental health strengthens trust, social cohesion, and productivity, and supports the success of society as a whole.

Mental health is a shared form of capital for individuals, families, communities, and society. It must be cared for and invested in at all stages of life – in everyday environments, in education, in working life, and during societal changes – while also taking into account different minority groups and linguistic and cultural needs. During the implementation of the Mental Health Strategy, multiple efforts have been made to promote mental health in Finland.

National model for mental health promotion – the ABC for mental wellbeing

The ABC for Mental Wellbeing is a universal model for promoting mental health and can be implemented widely across different settings and target groups. The model is based on the Australian Act, Belong, Commit framework: A. Act – do something, B. Belong – do something with someone, C. Commit – do something meaningful. The ABC for Mental Wellbeing has been shown to be effective and to promote mental health. THL manages the model and its national licence. A description of the model and contact information for implementing it can be found in Finnish in Innokylä.
