Water

Small wooden pier on the lake.

Water is essential for life, and the quality of the water we consume has a direct impact on our health. Achieving and maintaining good quality of water requires specific types of expertise in the production, distribution and use of water, as well as cooperation among various operators.

The quality of water may deteriorate, for example, due to problems resulting from its chemical treatment, remaining for long periods in the water distribution system or structural or use-related problems with the water system. Research is used to obtain further information on the prevailing problems related to water quality and how to solve them.

THL studies different types of waters, ranging from raw water to wastewater. The research conducted by THL covers the quality of water and the microbiological and chemical problems caused by the way that the water is treated, distributed and used. THL also provides assistance to the authorities in the investigation of waterborne outbreaks.
