Norovirus surveillance system

THL’s Expert Microbiology unit is responsible for the laboratory-based surveillance of norovirus infections in Finland.

Purpose of surveillance

  • To keep track of the incidence of noroviruses in Finland
  • To identify norovirus outbreaks
  • To identify new norovirus strains 

Surveillance methods

  • Laboratory-based surveillance by the National Infectious Diseases Register
  • Food and waterborne disease outbreak surveillance system RYMY
  • Virologic monitoring at the THL laboratory
  • Monitoring the syndrome using the Register of Primary Health Care Visits (Avohilmo)
  • Finnish National Infectious Diseases Register
