Pneumococcal vaccinations for at-risk groups

This page provides instructions for scheduling the pneumococcal vaccinations of groups at risk for medical reasons. The vaccine is paid for by the treatment provider or the recipient.

Children aged over 5, working-age adults and persons aged 65 or over who have chronic illnesses or risk factors for a serious disease:

  • a liquor fistula
  • a cochlear implant   
  • a chronic respiratory disease
  • a chronic heart disease (a clinically significant disease causing symptoms)          
  • diabetes
  • hepatic failure
  • spleen failure or splenectomy
  • HIV infection
  • other immunodeficiency disorder
    • lymphoma
    • multiple myeloma
    • nephrotic syndrome
    • inborn or acquired immunodeficiency (excluding agammaglobulinemia)
    • organ or tissue transplant 
    • patients receiving long-term systemic cortisone treatment or other immunosuppressive medication  
  • permanent institutional care
  • alcoholism

One dose if no previous conjugate vaccinations

if PPV23 administered earlier:
one dose at case-by-case discretion no earlier than one year after the PPV vaccine

At the case-by-case discretion of the treating physician. one dose 12 months after the PCV dose
