Sexual rights in Finland
Sexual rights are fundamental rights guaranteed by international agreements. Some immigrants and asylum seekers come from countries in which gender equality and sexual rights might be realised in a very different way than in Finland.
In order to make immigrants and asylum seekers aware of the rights prevailing in Finland, they must be provided with appropriate sexual education on:
- Gender equality
- Women’s sexual rights
- Legislation
- Rights of sexual minorities
Discuss at least the following:
- Every person has the right to decide how they fulfil their sexuality while respecting the sexual rights of others.
- Everyone has the right to equality and freedom from of all forms of discrimination. No one may be discriminated against on the basis of gender or sexual orientation.
- In Finland, sexuality is seen as a positive factor that enriches life and in which appreciation and respect for another person are essential.
- Comprehensive sexual education is part of the health education provided in the Finnish basic education.
- Sexual violence (such as coercion, harassment or rape) is a punishable crime.
- All physical punishment of children is prohibited.
- Everyone has the right to sexual and reproductive health services.
- Everyone can freely select their partner and make a decision on marriage and starting a family.
