The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) and the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) are deepening their cooperation. An agreement on a new type of collaboration was signed in Kuopio on 16 June.

The cooperation opens up opportunities for broader sharing and joint utilisation of datasets, research infrastructures and expertise. It will also support the development of evidence-based good practices.

The closer cooperation is expected to create new opportunities for national and international research, development and innovation activities, as well as education.

“The University of Eastern Finland and THL share a strong history . We have published more than 2,500 joint publications and have had numerous joint professorships and shared doctoral researchers. The agreement reflects our mutual commitment to further strengthening our cooperation in order to boost  high-quality research and expertise,” says Jussi Pihlajamäki, Vice Rector of the University of Eastern Finland.

The partnership between THL and the university focuses particularly on four themes: sustainable and resilient healthcare, mental health and wellbeing, planetary health and microbiological safety, and knowledge-based management.

“THL is a national expert and research institute. We manage extensive register data on the health and wellbeing of the population, as well as population-level health surveys and health examination studies, which are  nationally and internationally unique due to  their comprehensiveness  and long-term time series. Together with the University of Eastern Finland, we can unitilize these data sources even more broadly tostrengthen research, education and the capacity of society  as a whole to make better, evidence-informed decisions,” says Hanna Tolonen, Deputy Director General of Research, Development and Innovation at THL.
