Non-discrimination and gender equality

Our aim is to lead the way in equality in Finnish society.

We actively develop and monitor our activities with the help of an operational and personnel policy plan for gender equality and non-discrimination.

The working group on gender equality and non-discrimination, chaired by Mia Nykopp, Director of Administration and Finance, is responsible for updating, monitoring and evaluating the plans. Head of Human Resources Leena Kanerva is responsible for the implementation of the personnel policy plan. The working group has horizontal representation from all departments. The group also has two specialist secretaries as its resources.

The realisation of gender equality and non-discrimination is monitored not only based on the plans but also through regular occupational welfare surveys and as part of our annual report. Gender equality and non-discrimination training is also included in the training programme intended for the entire personnel and part of orientation material for new employees.

Gender equality and non-discrimination personnel policy plan

Our gender equality and non-discrimination personnel policy plan consists of the following:

  1. Procedures ensuring equal treatment in appointments and support for career development
  2. Possibility of reconciling work, family and leisure
  3. Equality of pay and remuneration
  4. Equal right to good management and participation
  5. Equal right to a safe and healthy work community
  6. Systematic and transparent gender equality and non-discrimination work

All aspects involve several practical measures. Among other things, we have introduced recruitment methods that increase personnel diversity. One of these is a diversity clause that encourages people from different minorities or under-represented groups to apply for vacancies. We also develop our activities by offering opportunities for work trials and experimenting with a model of subsidised work to hire employees with partial work ability.

By offering flexibility and issuing recommendations, we also support the reconciliation of work, family life and private life and consider the diversity of families. We also encourage fathers and the other parent to take family leaves.

We actively promote gender equality and non-discrimination

We produce up-to-date gender equality information for different actors in society and regularly implement extensive research projects related to gender equality and non-discrimination. We also take the gender perspective into account, where possible, in all our data collections and production of statistics.

We are a specialist on gender equality and non-discrimination. We provide training for different parties on such issues as gender-sensitive and more equal communication, assessment of gender impact and, more broadly, assessment of impact on humans. THL also has a centre of expertise in anti-violence work.

We will ensure the accessibility of our websites and make corrections if we find any shortcomings. The accessibility of websites means that everyone can use them as easily and comprehensibly as possible, also with various assistive technologies such as screen readers for visually impaired people.
