The Finnish Drinking Habits Survey collects information on the ways and situations in which Finnish people consumed alcohol and the alcohol-related negative impacts they experienced. The information plays an important role in national monitoring of the alcohol consumption situation.

The information obtained from the Drinking Habits Survey is used by decision-makers, civil servants, health and social care professionals, researchers and the media working on alcohol-related issues. The information is used especially in alcohol policy at the national level, in preventing negative impacts related to alcohol consumption and in the development, planning, monitoring and research of care needs.

The survey was carried out most recently in the form of telephone interviews as part of the Healthy Finland health survey in 2023. Before that, it has been carried out in 1968, 1976, 1984, 1992, 2000, 2008 and 2016, i.e. every eight years since 1968, as separate face-to-face interviews.

In the latest data collection in spring 2023, half of the 20-79-year-old sample group for the Healthy Finland health examination (4,606 people) was randomly selected for the study.
