The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) collects information on the health, wellbeing and use of services of the Finnish population through comprehensive population studies. This information is needed to plan, develop and evaluate the social and health care system, social and health policies and health promotion measures.

The Maamu Study specifically focused on collecting information on the health, wellbeing, service use and living conditions of Russian-speaking, Somali and Kurdish origin adults in Finland. The study was carried out in Helsinki (2010–2011), Espoo, Vantaa, Turku (2011), Tampere and Vaasa (2012).

The health of the Finnish core population was simultaneously studied in the Health 2011 Follow-up Study. Comparative information from the Health 2011 Follow-up Study enables the comparison of the health and wellbeing of the Finnish core population and migrant population.
