Icehearts longitudinal study (ILS)

In the Icehearts longitudinal study, the life course and psychosocial well-being of children in five Icehearts teams that started in 2015 are followed, along with the perceived benefits, challenges, and impacts of the program.

The project is a long-term, sports–based early support program designed to support children who have already raised particular concern during their early childhood education years.

Goals

The aim of the study is to generate knowledge about the life course and psychosocial well-being of children participating in the Icehearts program, as well as the perceived benefits, impacts, and potential challenges of the program.

The aim is to promote the child’s social skills and to provide a reliable, present, and safe adult who supports the child through the transitions of childhood and adolescence.

Implementation

The study follows the life course and psychosocial well-being of children in five Icehearts teams throughout the entire 12-year duration of the Icehearts program. Within this program, an Icehearts mentor forms a sports team of preschool-aged children in collaboration with preschool and primary school staff, and commits to guiding and supporting the child both in the team and in the schoolwork.

Research data are collected from the participating children, their parents, Icehearts mentors, and the children’s teachers. Information is gathered through surveys, interviews, and observations of the activities.
