Population studies on multicultural population

The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) has conducted several population surveys to study the health and wellbeing of people with a foreign background. The most recent survey was the MoniSuomi study, conducted in 2022–2023.

The MoniSuomi survey was carried out between September 2022 and March 2023 using an electronic form, supplemented by a paper questionnaire and telephone interviews. Including all response methods, the response rate was 44.1 per cent (n = 7,838).

Data from the Healthy Finland 2023 survey was used as comparison data for the MoniSuomi study. The study is a continuation of the FinMonik study carried out in 2018–2019.

Relatively little data is available on the more traditional linguistic and cultural minorities in Finland, including the Roma and the Sámi. This data cannot be collected in connection with surveys addressed to the whole population, as the numbers of participants representing these groups are low.

In 2018, THL conducted the Roma Wellbeing Study that collected information on health and wellbeing of the Finnish Roma population. In total, 365 persons participated in the study.
