Equality infographics on education
From this page you can find visualized information about the state of equality in working life and education in Finland. The infographics are meant to strengthen the data basis on the state of equality as well as raise awareness on issues regarding equality, which disable achieving equality and equity in working life.
The infographics include intersectional analyses according to gender (women/men) and origin (Finnish and foreign-born), level of education and country of origin. Gender data comes from the national register.
The infographics are freely accessible. You can download and utilize them as a part of your presentation, social media posts, reports and other publications.

The equality infographics on education
14 percent of women with a foreign background and 47 percent of men with a foreign background are studying in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
11 percent of women with a Finnish background and 44 percent of men with a Finnish background are studying in STEM fields. 25 percent of women with a foreign background and 6 percent of men with a foreign background are studying in the fields of education, health, and wellbeing (EHW). 22 percent of women with a Finnish background and 5 percent of men with a Finnish background are studying in EHW fields.
Breakdown of students in male- and female-dominated sectors (STEM and EHW) in Finland by gender and background
Women accounted for 25 percent of those with a foreign background studying in Finland in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and 20 percent of those with a Finnish background studying in the same fields. Men accounted for 19 percent of those with a foreign background studying in the fields of education, health, and wellbeing (EHW) and 18 percent of those with a Finnish background studying in the same fields.
The share of highly educated by gender in Finland
Women with foreign background have the highest share of highly educated (51%) in comparison to women (47%) and men (33%) in general population, as well as men with foreign background (47%).
The share of overqualified among highly educated employed by gender in Finland
Foreign background women do not advance to careers corresponding to higher level education, despite language skills and Finnish degree.
More than one in three highly educated women of foreign background is overqualified for their current jobs compared to every fifth Finnish-born woman.
