Equality infographics on work-life segregation

From this page you can find visualized information about the state of equality in working life and education in Finland. The infographics are meant to strengthen the data basis on the state of equality as well as raise awareness on issues regarding equality, which disable achieving equality and equity in working life.

The infographics include intersectional analyses according to gender (women/men) and origin (Finnish and foreign-born), level of education and country of origin. Gender data comes from the national register.

The infographics are freely accessible. You can download and utilize them as a part of your presentation, social media posts, reports and other publications.

10 percent of women with a foreign background and 35 percent of men with a foreign background work in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). 8 percent of women with a Finnish background and 40 percent of men with a Finnish background work in STEM sectors. 26 percent of women with a foreign background and 7 percent of men with a foreign background work in the fields of education, health, and wellbeing (EHW). 33 percent of women with a Finnish background and 6 percent of men with a Finnish background work in EHW sectors.

Women accounted for 18 percent of those with a foreign background working in Finland in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and 17 percent of those with a Finnish background working in the same fields. Men accounted for 26 percent of those with a foreign background working in the fields of education, health and wellbeing (EHW) and 16 percent of those with a Finnish background working in the same fields.

Equal occupations mean occupations in which the share of women and men working in the occupational groups is 40–60 per cent. Of women with a Finnish background, 9.4 percent work in equal occupations and of men, 9.8 percent. Of women with a foreign background, 10.1 percent work in equal occupations and of men, 9.7 percent. Highly educated women and men work in equal occupations more often than women and men with a low level of education.

Men and women with a foreign background are employed less often as managers, professionals, or associate professionals than men and women with a Finnish background. Men and women with a foreign background are employed as workers more often than men and women with a Finnish background.

Among people with a Finnish background working in managerial positions, 65 percent are men and only 35 percent are women. Among people with a foreign background working in managerial positions, 73 percent are men and 27 percent are women.

The equality infographics were chosen based on the views of the state of equality and central issues regarding equality by equality and non-discrimination experts as well as the goals of Manifold More project (ESF) between 2019–2022.
