Vaccinations – Vaccination coverage among adolescents

HPV vaccination coverage

The target for the HPV vaccination is a coverage of at least 90 percent in order to stop the circulation of the virus in the population and to reduce the incidence of cancers caused by HPV.

In 2025, pupils born in 2012 completed primary school. In this age group, the coverage for the first dose of the HPV vaccine was 80 percent among girls and 74 percent among boys. Among those who completed lower secondary school and were born in 2009, 84 percent of girls and 76 percent of boys had received the HPV vaccine.

HPV vaccination coverage in Finland is lower than in the other Nordic countries

In Sweden, Norway, and Iceland, the vaccination coverage for the first dose of the HPV vaccine among girls born in 2012 is over 90 percent, and in Denmark it is 89 percent.

Among boys of the same age, vaccination coverage is slightly lower than among girls in all Nordic countries. Over 90 percent coverage is achieved in Norway and Iceland. Coverage is 87 percent in Denmark and Sweden, but in Finland it is only 74 percent.

About the data in more detail

Description of the statistics

THL monitors HPV vaccination coverage and reports in real time on the progress of vaccinations using the national vaccination register.

Due to issues related to recording vaccinations and transferring data, the actual vaccination coverage may be higher than the figures in the vaccination register.

Update schedule

The coverage data will next be updated in autumn 2026.
