The Forensic Medicine Unit

  • carries out forensic autopsies in Finland
  • carries out histological treatments and staining of tissue samples taken from organs during forensic autopsies
  • guides and monitors cause of death investigations in Finland. Cause of death investigations are official activities that are always based on the applicable legislation.
  • handles checking of death certificates
  • assists authorities in resolving legal and criminal matters by carrying out statutory age assessments of asylum seekers and the identification of the deceased through dental examinations
  • provides clinical forensic services to the police and other authorities in the Greater Helsinki
  • acts as an expert in matters concerning forensic medicine
  • partners with the university to provide training of specialists in forensic medicine
  • participates in research and development activities in the field
