Forensic Medicine
The Forensic Medicine Unit
- carries out forensic autopsies in Finland
- carries out histological treatments and staining of tissue samples taken from organs during forensic autopsies
- guides and monitors cause of death investigations in Finland. Cause of death investigations are official activities that are always based on the applicable legislation.
- handles checking of death certificates
- assists authorities in resolving legal and criminal matters by carrying out statutory age assessments of asylum seekers and the identification of the deceased through dental examinations
- provides clinical forensic services to the police and other authorities in the Greater Helsinki
- acts as an expert in matters concerning forensic medicine
- partners with the university to provide training of specialists in forensic medicine
- participates in research and development activities in the field
