Course description and learning objectives

The Intervene in violence online learning module consists of three courses:

  • Intervene in violence online training on domestic violence – The course on domestic violence increases knowledge of the phenomena of domestic violence and violence against women. Its aim is to strengthen professionals’ ability to identify and intervene in domestic violence. It also challenges participants to reflect on their own attitudes towards domestic violence.
  • Digital violence online training – This course enhances professionals’ understanding of digital violence, stalking and coercive control in intimate relationships, helps identify the complexity of the phenomenon and improves readiness to intervene.
  • Honour-related violence online training – This course strengthens the ability to recognise honour-related violence and provides tools for intervention.

Duration and content of the course

Intervene in violence

The course consists of 4 sections, which take approximately 3–5 hours to complete.

The course:

  • increases knowledge of the complex phenomena of domestic violence and violence against women
  • explains human rights treaties and legislation related to domestic violence
  • challenges professionals to reflect on their own attitudes towards intimate partner violence
  • strengthens professionals’ ability to identify and intervene
  • provides methods and tools for intervention
  • highlights the importance of multi-professional cooperation in intervening in domestic violence
  • increases knowledge of specialised support services in Finland.

The course includes experiences and perspectives from both professionals and violence survivors.

Digital violence

This course consists of 5 sections, which take approximately 2 hours to complete.

It provides up-to-date information on forms of digital violence and stalking, improving data security, supporting and encountering different parties involved in violence, and the criminal process.

Honour-related violence

This course consists of 4 sections, which take approximately 1–2 hours to complete.

It develops understanding of honour-related violence as a phenomenon, helps identify its different forms, strengthens professionals’ ability to intervene, and provides information on obligations, legislation, human rights and services for victims. It also promotes prevention, multi-professional cooperation and cultural sensitivity.

  • You can complete all courses independently or in a group.
  • Each course can be completed separately, and you will receive a certificate for each.
  • The courses and additional materials can be found under the Intervene in violence (Puutu väkivaltaan) category on the online platform.
  • The courses are available in Finnish and Swedish.

Target audience

The Intervene in violence online courses and additional materials are primarily intended for healthcare and social welfare professionals and police officers, as well as students in these fields. They are also suitable for professionals in education and child development, legal services staff and students in these fields.
